'The Crossing'

This original stencil painting by Melbourne artist Geoff Cunningham captures the nostalgic character of suburban streetscapes. Inspired by ordinary neighbourhoods, Geoff blends hand-cut stencils and layered spray techniques to create bold light, shadow and detail. Each piece celebrates the warmth, simplicity and familiarity of everyday life.

A friend of mine was living in France where he took this photo – I was inspired by this seemingly simple image of an ordinary French street scene; except for a Starbucks Cafe which doesn’t seem to belong. To further emphasise this I have added a McDonalds and KFC to the background to highlight that even the French are succumbing to American fast food “culture”.

This is the perfect blend of old style elegance, combined with a new art technique which is a certain conversation starter and a feature in any room.
