'The Long Wait' is an original hand-cut stencil and aerosol painting by Melbourne artist Geoff Cunningham.
Set outside the former United Kingdom Hotel, now better known to many Melburnians as the Clifton Hill McDonald’s, the work captures a familiar 1970s suburban moment: a boy and dog waiting in the back of the family station wagon while the adults are somewhere inside. A Big M carton sits beside him - a small bribe for his patience!
Warm brickwork, vintage cars and long shadows give the painting a nostalgic Australian feel, while the quiet humour of the waiting child and dog adds a slightly bittersweet edge. Part architectural portrait, part childhood memory, 'The Long Wait' continues Cunningham’s exploration of Australian suburbia, family slides, summer afternoons and the small rituals of growing up - when being bored was just part of growing up.
