This contemporary stencil artwork by Melbourne artist Geoff Cunningham explores the connection between technology, imagination and modern design. Created using hand-cut stencils and layered spray techniques, each piece blends bold colour with digital-influenced portraits and perforated steel. The Future Facing collection invites viewers to explore new ideas, alternative realities and the evolving visual language of the modern world.
"This new series uses my usual stencil technique, but this time the subjects are not inspired by memory or place - but are portraits created using AI - faces made from code. Using perforated steel as my "canvas", suspended over fluorescent backgrounds, each image plays with light and perception - asking: where does human identity end, and digital mimicry begin?
The holes in the steel represent pixels, the colours behind them blur and mix in the eye, not on the canvas. As the viewer shift their position, so too does the image - just like the line between the real and the virtual."
40w x 40h cm, Aerosol on galvanised steel & canvas
* The perforated steel shifts the colour wildly with light, creating a bold, ever-changing display. Hang it in bright light to unleash its full impact. Photos don’t do it justice—watch the videos to see its daring style come alive in your space.
